A Town United: How Collaboration Made Bideford’s Victorian Frost Fair a Shopping Success
Bideford's inaugural Victorian Christmas Frost Fair, held on 14 December 2024, transformed the town into a bustling festive hub. The event was organised collaboratively by Torridge District Council, Bideford Town Council, local businesses and community groups, with backing from the Bideford Regeneration Board.
The event featured a rich array of entertainment, including stilt walkers, penny farthings, horse and carriage rides, donkeys, street food, craft workshops, and live music. Santa’s Grotto and Victorian-themed festivities attracted families and visitors, celebrating Bideford's heritage and community spirit across the town from The Pannier Market to The Quay, Mill Street to the High Street.
One of the key reasons for its success was the enthusiastic involvement of the town’s traders. Many dressed in Victorian attire, hosted workshops, and put on demonstrations, further enhancing the event's immersive and festive atmosphere.
The Frost Fair was funded through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF). The Bideford Regeneration Board's role is to steer the development of regeneration plans and ensure the successful implementation of key initiatives to revitalise the town.
The event was widely praised for its vibrant atmosphere and strong turnout. Local businesses embraced the Victorian theme, while visitors appreciated the nostalgic Christmas experience. Shopkeepers and community members expressed enthusiasm, hailing the event as a success and expressing excitement for its return next year.
The Bideford Victorian Christmas demonstrated the collective effort and pride of Bideford’s community, supported by the guidance of the Councils and SPF funding. Plans are already underway for future celebrations, inviting more businesses and participants to join in.
